Nice work! Not much left of stock chassis
How do you make that engine water proof for deep waters? Or is it so light weight that it flows on water?

we move the ECU to a nice dry place and put it in a waterproof box, the electrics are all GM "Weatherpack" connectors, the spark plug caps are a really good fit and are sealed with silicone grease, there is no distributor to worry about - hopefully it will be ok, when it is finished I drive the car into a lake, turn it off 30 minutes and come back and start it, if it doesnt work then theres a problem

more tube..

..........and some more

its been fun learning - its the first time we use tube like this! we use a computer program called bend tec pro to help us calculate the tubes, without it we would have made a lot of mistakes!

wheels have arrived now

we try to keep the car nice and light for the swamps so we use alumium and fibreglass a lot, Mike came and made the mould for the roof section

about 80% of the car is Tig welded - its been a long time since I did this, I need more practice!

we cut some more tube

and made the suspension brace

and the wings

suspension is 16" (40cm) in the back and 14" (35cm) front, the bodies are 63mm

The seats are from a defender, my wife found them - they are so ugly no one else wanted to buy them so we got them cheap

we drive prototype class so we use 39.5x18x16.5, the wheels are internal double beadlock - hopefully if we have enough time we make the CTIS (Central Tyre Inflation) but there is so much to do and not so much time left

the radiator has a home now

lots of Tig work - mig would have been a lot faster....... but I'm stubborn

we start making panels - many of them!

We use the original rover chassis because it saves us about 1 week of work - I dont think 4 link is so useful for trophy raid, its more difficult to keep from breaking, needs more spare parts and we dont need that much suspension travel.

glad you like it - we fly 2 flags when we race, The Finnish Cross and the English cross, without the Team in Finland this car does not work, Kim, Mikko, Harry Potter, Kai, James and Vili

Are those re-centered Hummer wheels, and if so, where did you bought them?

the wheels are Stazworks, John makes some good stuff (maybe a little bit heavy but you can drive fast into big rocks and they survive

we make some hinges for the doors

and weld up some old box section that we found - free is my fave price

Kim seems to like having doors for some reason (he is lazy) so we must make them, I try to make the doors very light -

its easy to get in and out even for Kim (he is only 1.24 high) I make some door tops before the winter comes, I dont have time at the moment

starting to look a bit more like a car now

ha, long enough - my mind remembers what to do but by hands seem to have forgotten sometimes I think theres enough practice still to come so maybe it will get better!

I start to make a petrol tank, these engines are supposed to be not as thirsty as SBC's but I still make this one 120ltrs

we made a tool for making rills in aluminium and now I cant stop using it! Kims footwell;

I dont think it will stay shiny for long

Mike makes more fibreglass - we use it in places where it's a complicated shape that would take too long to make in aluminium, its very fast to do it this way

I will fill this hole with the petrol tank, a locker for rope, a back winch, radiator, spare fuel, hi-lift, chainsaw...... shit, maybe not enough space lol

looks a lot better without the tape on it

started to weld up the sump for the petrol tank - starting to find my speed again (finally!)

hope you like?!

kiitos

Jez

You have pic of that tool? I need to fab one too, I have to weld couple of square meters of steelsheet to cargo floor, and it needs a bit of reinforcement to keep it from rattling.

Heikki - a few old bearings, 2 gears from an old motorbike and some box section steel, turn a couple of parts on the lathe for the rollers

we clamp the tool in the vice and then put a G clamp on the tool to adjust the pressure

cost maybe 10 euro in bits

Simple and cost effective. Nice

Do those arms have any significant flex when working? Aluminium is soft, but I think that with steel you would have start easy and roll back and forth several times before wanted depth is achieved. I guess I use similar, but much sturdier design so I get wanted rill depth on a one run.

the tool doesnt flex with 1.6mm ally, it doesnt like 3.0mm though - it doesnt seem to mind 1mm steel but thicker than that would need something chunkier, burn a horseshoe out of some 30mm plate?

its perfectly acceptable if a tree hits Kim in the nuts, it would be doing the world a favour

Time to start working on the petrol tank, we make a flange with bolt holes in it and weld the flange to the top of the tank, the thick steel plate is clamped on to minimise distortion during welding and keep the gasket face nice and flat

the cover plate needs holes drilled to fit the feed pipes from the fuel pumps and the return fuel line

we dont have the right sizes of aluminium and no time to try and find it, but we do have welders and a lathe - so we make things fit

a little cutting (this lathe is older than god.......but it was very very cheap)

a little more welding - and we have a petrol filler and cap

long nights working on the car....... not enough sleep, going to work the next day hurts

nothing exceeds like excess....
