In April of this year, the new line of W461 products is introduced. In the model range of the W461, the convertible is missing unlike the W460. Instead of the convertible, the pickup has its debut with a wheelbase of 2850 mm. There are also changes in the motorization: the only diesel engine is now a 2.9 liter 5-cylinder motor with 95 hp from the MB transporter 'Sprinter'
The engine of the new 290 GD originated from the Mercedes-Benz van 'sprinter' where however it was equipped with a turbo charger. One reason probably why the turbo charger had been refused by Graz for the G could be that the engine so had been controlled purely mechanically, what simplified of course it maintenance and repair, e.g. what the globetrotters under the g-drivers up will have pleased, because which jungle forge already has ...
1997 at last Graz supplied the G now nevertheless a turbo charger, after already some Mercedes dealers offered in the years before 290 GDs with a free turbo charger (e.g. from THS).
Eli 290G:tä on ollut 95hv vaparilla ja 120hv turbolla. Kovasti ihmettelisin jos tehdas olisi tehnyt kolme "erilaista konetta" maasturiin, sprintteriin ja sitten vielä henkilöautoon. Hmm...mutta onhan se mahdollista. Toki sukupolvierohan noissa on tietenkin (vapari 95hv vs turbo 120hv). En ole nähnyt kyllä livenä vielä yhtään 290GD:tä...ja jos sellainen olisi ja moottori pitäisi vaihtaa niin eiköhän sinne kannata laittaa OM603 tai OM606 :) Ja alkuperäiseen kysymykseen että passaako paikalleen niin kaikenhan saa passaamaan :D
