we move the ECU to a nice dry place and put it in a waterproof box, the electrics are all GM "Weatherpack" connectors, the spark plug caps are a really good fit and are sealed with silicone grease, there is no distributor to worry about - hopefully it will be ok, when it is finished I drive the car into a lake, turn it off 30 minutes and come back and start it, if it doesnt work then theres a problem

its been fun learning - its the first time we use tube like this! we use a computer program called bend tec pro to help us calculate the tubes, without it we would have made a lot of mistakes!
wheels have arrived now http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-03-06.JPG we try to keep the car nice and light for the swamps so we use alumium and fibreglass a lot, Mike came and made the mould for the roof section http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2007-03-10.JPG about 80% of the car is Tig welded - its been a long time since I did this, I need more practice! http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2007-03-10.JPG we cut some more tube http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2007-03-11.JPG and made the suspension brace http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2007-03-11.JPG and the wings :) http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2007-03-11.JPG suspension is 16" (40cm) in the back and 14" (35cm) front, the bodies are 63mm nothing exceeds like excess.... The seats are from a defender, my wife found them - they are so ugly no one else wanted to buy them so we got them cheap :)
we drive prototype class so we use 39.5x18x16.5, the wheels are internal double beadlock - hopefully if we have enough time we make the CTIS (Central Tyre Inflation) but there is so much to do and not so much time left http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2007-03-14.JPG the radiator has a home now http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2007-03-14.JPG lots of Tig work - mig would have been a lot faster....... but I'm stubborn http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2007-03-14.JPG we start making panels - many of them! We use the original rover chassis because it saves us about 1 week of work - I dont think 4 link is so useful for trophy raid, its more difficult to keep from breaking, needs more spare parts and we dont need that much suspension travel. glad you like it - we fly 2 flags when we race, The Finnish Cross and the English cross, without the Team in Finland this car does not work, Kim, Mikko, Harry Potter, Kai, James and Vili :) nothing exceeds like excess.... |

Time to start working on the petrol tank, we make a flange with bolt holes in it and weld the flange to the top of the tank, the thick steel plate is clamped on to minimise distortion during welding and keep the gasket face nice and flat

Repro - it's 2 pieces of steel welded together (4mm and 2mm), it's so the total plate is only "thick" in the places that see the highest amount of force (it saves a little weight if you build like this)

Castor angle adjusted http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2007-04-12.JPG bits of exhaust welded http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2007-04-12.JPG we do a lot of staring http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-06.JPG and more staring http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-05.JPG sometimes things get done http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-06.JPG its nice to be able to sleep and weld at the same time http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-06.JPG the steering ram is mounted finally http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-06.JPG and we make a tool so we can take the ram to pieces http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-06.JPG nothing exceeds like excess.... |
its an odd looking thing but it works well :)
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-07.JPG we make a place for the pillow block to live, to get round the gearbox we must use a 2 piece propshaft at the front http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-07.JPG The Back axle is finished, it needs paint and everything bolted back into it but that wont take long http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-08.JPG We cut some steel up and burn out some holes http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-08.JPG then we look at it (we spend too much time just looking at things ) http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-09.JPG burn a hole and put a flitch tube into it to make it stronger http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-09.JPG and then give it somewhere to live :) http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-09.JPG getting the panhard rod this flat means the axle only moves 1mm to the side for every 25mm up or down travel, its not too bad Kim and Mise say the front winch will be ready next week - we have a lot of work to do before then! nothing exceeds like excess.... |
R u gonna use hydraulic winch this time also? Has there been any problems with those, hot oils, brokened hoses, etc. ?
And what if U cant start engine, how do you use winch then, or is there emergency electric motor for hydraulic pump to case like this? Lots of stupid questions "Suck my dick" -Ron Jeremy Montenegros#10 |
theres no such thing as stupid questions - only stupid answers
yes we use hydraulics again this year, the winch has a really good combination of power, reliability and speed its difficult to find another way thats better for us. we have no problems with broken parts - Petals winch was used a lot for long hard pulls, many many times and it just kept going and never slowed down, we never stopped it or had to use a snail for a double pull :) if you make sure you have good pipes of the right size, a nice big hydraulic tank and use HVI46 oil (it stays stable even at high temperatures) then its very very very reliable. One of our friends winched almost all of a 17km stage at Ladoga in 2006 using the same winch. if the engine stops then we are in trouble and we have to use the hi-lift to winch us out we dont have have the time to make an emergency electric pump at the moment (maybe we do this later). You can use the pump from a 12 volt small truck as a backup , it would be more sensible to put an electric winch on the back of the car so if the engine dies you can get out of trouble but I like the power to much to give it up If the car is waterproof then you have nothing to worry about; test the car in deep water before competition - drive in, turn off the engine, leave the car underwater for 30 minutes and then go back and start the engine - if it passes this test then its not going to be a problem, so far so good but who knows - this type of engine is new to us nothing exceeds like excess.... |
nice pillow block, where from or is it custom made?

we check the axle clears everything in the up position http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-11.JPG and the down http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-12.JPG we start to re-assemble the portals http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-13.JPG and use our 4340/300M CV joints - these are very strong http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-13.JPG paint starts going on http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-12.JPG front winch tray starts to be made http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-11.JPG and gets welded in http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-12.JPG we take a Defender windscreen surround and cut off all the pieces we dont need, then we drill out the welds and take the cast aluminium end off.. http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-12.JPG .....then we fill in the holes from the drill http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-12.JPG cut off the excess from the extruded section http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-12.JPG weld it back together and put a strengthening piece along the top http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-13.JPG and check it fits :) http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-13.JPG nothing exceeds like excess.... |
Bend it boys. I love those pictures about group action, Looks Über gay.
I could cry for the frogs allready, they are going to be so hurt this year. |
Good morning Jez! Thank's for the offer, but i'm faithful to our team
Hmmmm..but Kimble is so young and hot |
Moi Potteri! :)
not a hot as last years action - that advert for manlurrrrrrrrrrve on the back of your sexbus got a hell of a response, we were impressed you could walk afterwards let alone drive.. http://www.flyingspanners.net/galler...4-19h17m01.jpg and who could refuse a body like that?? http://www.flyingspanners.net/galler...//IMG_6817.jpg you remember the fun and games that proto speed had with portal bolts last year? we fixed it.. no more problems http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-14.JPG Harry - Kimples a slut and anybodys for a cider... take 1 or maybe 2 cans and he's yours, I just need him back in the morning to navigate nothing exceeds like excess.... |
Thanks boys!!
But Jez booking "sleeping" place in my tent, so i`am busy in whole week! Kimple |
This is what a project really looks like!! NICE WORK!!!!!!!!
Keep up posting the pictures. I just gotta ask that how many guys are working on this car? And do you guys work at all or are you just staying at garage building The Mouse??? GREAT WORK
--------------------------------------- www.pirate4x4.no www.pirate4x4.com www.formula-offroad.fi
|
Kimple - why do you always get the words "tent" and "ass" mixed up?
Thanks Jare, we build like we race - as a team! Everyone does what they are good at, most of the time its Vince and me (Vince specialises in Mig welding, I do the crap tig work and between us we make all the steel and aluminium parts) I do the overall design and maths (which explains why things look so strange then theres John - he does the electrical and electronics, Mike - he's the fibreglass guy, they come and do things when there are things to do. My wife Zuzana feeds us all and makes lots of coffee. On the Finnish side Kimple and Mise are making the front winch, some friends in the US are acting as a postal service to help us to get parts - its an international collection of oddballs working together. we all have day jobs - the only time we get to work is in the night time but we try to work fast, sometimes its daylight before we leave the workshop... then you get that "ahhh 45minutes of sleep before work" feeling... yay Kimple and Tapsa are in the same boat at the moment I think..? nothing exceeds like excess.... we had a couple of problems to deal with yesterday, we found out some of the gearbox parts that were supposed to be on order....weren't....
so we have to ring a lot of friends and use a lot of favours to get stuff quickly, but it should be ok now the only other thing we got done was starting to mount all the parts for inside the petrol tank, we need 4 pipes (2 for the feeds from the in-tank pumps, 1 as a return from the pumps and 1 for the breather), the pipes are 1mm thick and the plate is 10mm- Im out of practice because it wasnt easy to weld http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-17.JPG we also make the hole for the fuel level guage - this works with the dashboard so we can get scared about how much petrol is left the last hole is for a petrol proof electrical connector to get 12 volts to the fuel pumps John found some aluminium tube and we cut this up - each piece will hold its own fuel pump http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-17.JPG I will weld this to the cover tonight and get the tank finished :) nothing exceeds like excess.... |
You have great team. Is it working as well as now in russian swamps?

we wanted to get the petrol tank finished so some more welding
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-17.JPG and Vince makes some clips from stainless steel and some straps from a trucks air tank, these hold the tank down in the car http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-17.JPG we dont want the electrical connector to get loose so we use lockwire http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-17.JPG just needs the cables done and the rubber pipe putting in place http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-17.JPG yay - one thing finished! http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-17.JPG nothing exceeds like excess.... |

well it was a busy weekend but as usual it doesnt look like it
the upper seat belt mounts are made - these will be welded to the cage http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-20.JPG we stand around looking at stuff again http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-19.JPG Finally the fuel array is finished and ready to be installed (and hopefully never come out again!! http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-20.JPG its slow at the moment because there is lots of ackward welds to do http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-18.JPG thank god its Tig - no hot spatter dropping on body places that dont like melting metal http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-18.JPG Rear winch tray is done http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-19.JPG the mudguards are offered up - the frames are done now http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-20.JPG as well as bulding the race car we have to make our other car legal to drive http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-20.JPG nothing exceeds like excess.... |
seat belt mounts welded on
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-22.JPG the mudguard stays are on now as well http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-22.JPG all the bodywork is in a pile on the floor - we need to get some paint on the tubes http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-22.JPG I think the radius of the stays came out pretty well http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-22.JPG nothing exceeds like excess.... |

its not easy in England - the government are changing the rules all the time, we have a tradition of small companies making cars over here, some of them are kits you can build at home and others are mini car manufaturers (Noble, Caterham, Westfield etc), these will all be killed off eventually - but while we can build cars, we will
we got the pedal box mounted and start panelling in http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-23.JPG tricky little panel to make but Vince likes to make things like this http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-23.JPG the alternator gets moved 30cm higher and the new damper goes on - this is keyed and will power the hydraulic system http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-23.JPG we finally get the gear shifter turret so we can put the last bracing tube in place http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-23.JPG we cut a stip of steel, rill it and drill some holes http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-22.JPG Tig some spacers to it and put the little gearboxes on the back http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-23.JPG so now we have 3 windscreen wipers :) http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-23.JPG nothing exceeds like excess.... |

Beer?? ha - almost forgotten what that tastes like! if we make it to Helsinki I think we will have an industrial drinking session at Molly Malones to try and remember... we try and compensate for the lack of "beer vitamins" by smoking more cigarettes and living off whatever crap food we can find in the petrol station - sometimes we are lucky though and my wife feeds us but mostly we live off crap

we got a bit more done last night.. Handbrake lever fitted - mush more comfortable than Landrover original position http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-25.JPG lots of these lugs were welded on - we use them to hold the mudguards http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-25.JPG the last of the bump cans got welded up http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-25.JPG we cut down the original defender steering column and welded it back together... just a little bit shorter than original http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-24.JPG then we cut the inner shaft, all the original bearings were re-used, it makes it work really well http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-24.JPG fits together nicely :) http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-24.JPG we smoke more cigarettes and decide what position it should be in http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-24.JPG and make a mount for it - nice and easy http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-25.JPG nothing exceeds like excess.... |

I think that Finnish orienteering rules do not allow fully hydraulic steering? Hope I'm wrong. www.alanmiehet.com #1 |
yes - we use orbitrol again this year, maybe after Ladoga we will make a different system. we made it in a way that means we can take the orbitrol away and have enough space a mechanical link. Personally I prefer full hydro, its stronger!
nothing exceeds like excess.... |
I like full hydraulic steering also. After I change to that, there has been no problems with steering. On the otherhand, even mechanical link would hold for me now, because steering is in pieces on the floor.
