Kimple - why do you always get the words "tent" and "ass" mixed up?

Thanks Jare, we build like we race - as a team! Everyone does what they are good at, most of the time its Vince and me (Vince specialises in Mig welding, I do the crap tig work and between us we make all the steel and aluminium parts) I do the overall design and maths (which explains why things look so strange then theres John - he does the electrical and electronics, Mike - he's the fibreglass guy, they come and do things when there are things to do. My wife Zuzana feeds us all and makes lots of coffee. On the Finnish side Kimple and Mise are making the front winch, some friends in the US are acting as a postal service to help us to get parts - its an international collection of oddballs working together.

we all have day jobs - the only time we get to work is in the night time but we try to work fast, sometimes its daylight before we leave the workshop... then you get that "ahhh 45minutes of sleep before work" feeling... yay

Kimple and Tapsa are in the same boat at the moment I think..?

we had a couple of problems to deal with yesterday, we found out some of the gearbox parts that were supposed to be on order....weren't....

so we have to ring a lot of friends and use a lot of favours to get stuff quickly, but it should be ok now

the only other thing we got done was starting to mount all the parts for inside the petrol tank, we need 4 pipes (2 for the feeds from the in-tank pumps, 1 as a return from the pumps and 1 for the breather), the pipes are 1mm thick and the plate is 10mm- Im out of practice because it wasnt easy to weld

http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-17.JPG
we also make the hole for the fuel level guage - this works with the dashboard so we can get scared about how much petrol is left the last hole is for a petrol proof electrical connector to get 12 volts to the fuel pumps

John found some aluminium tube and we cut this up - each piece will hold its own fuel pump
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-17.JPG
I will weld this to the cover tonight and get the tank finished :)

dollythelw 18.04.2008 12:03

we wanted to get the petrol tank finished so some more welding
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-17.JPG

and Vince makes some clips from stainless steel and some straps from a trucks air tank, these hold the tank down in the car
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-17.JPG

we dont want the electrical connector to get loose so we use lockwire
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-17.JPG

just needs the cables done and the rubber pipe putting in place
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-17.JPG

yay - one thing finished!

dollythelw 21.04.2008 12:36

well it was a busy weekend but as usual it doesnt look like it

the upper seat belt mounts are made - these will be welded to the cage
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-20.JPG

we stand around looking at stuff again
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-19.JPG

Finally the fuel array is finished and ready to be installed (and hopefully never come out again!!
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-20.JPG

its slow at the moment because there is lots of ackward welds to do
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-18.JPG

thank god its Tig - no hot spatter dropping on body places that dont like melting metal
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-18.JPG

Rear winch tray is done
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-19.JPG

the mudguards are offered up - the frames are done now
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-20.JPG

as well as bulding the race car we have to make our other car legal to drive

dollythelw 22.04.2008 14:08

seat belt mounts welded on
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-22.JPG

the mudguard stays are on now as well
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-22.JPG

all the bodywork is in a pile on the floor - we need to get some paint on the tubes
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-22.JPG

I think the radius of the stays came out pretty well

its not easy in England - the government are changing the rules all the time, we have a tradition of small companies making cars over here, some of them are kits you can build at home and others are mini car manufaturers (Noble, Caterham, Westfield etc), these will all be killed off eventually - but while we can build cars, we will

we got the pedal box mounted and start panelling in
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-23.JPG

tricky little panel to make but Vince likes to make things like this
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-23.JPG

the alternator gets moved 30cm higher and the new damper goes on - this is keyed and will power the hydraulic system
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-23.JPG

we finally get the gear shifter turret so we can put the last bracing tube in place
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-23.JPG

we cut a stip of steel, rill it and drill some holes
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-22.JPG

Tig some spacers to it and put the little gearboxes on the back
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-23.JPG

so now we have 3 windscreen wipers :)

I'm quite worried as I can't find any empty beer cans or even bottles from your garage pics. Every respectable project needs fair amount of beer to succes

Beer?? ha - almost forgotten what that tastes like! if we make it to Helsinki I think we will have an industrial drinking session at Molly Malones to try and remember... we try and compensate for the lack of "beer vitamins" by smoking more cigarettes and living off whatever crap food we can find in the petrol station - sometimes we are lucky though and my wife feeds us but mostly we live off crap

Beautiful ! !
When you have time, please take Roope with you
and let him see how to do welding. (I have his old Land Pover, now better than ever)
Best regards Jyty

dollythelw 25.04.2008 12:47

Thanks Jyty! I wondered what happened to that car, it was the green one?

we got a bit more done last night..
Handbrake lever fitted - mush more comfortable than Landrover original position
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-25.JPG

lots of these lugs were welded on - we use them to hold the mudguards
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-25.JPG

the last of the bump cans got welded up
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-25.JPG

we cut down the original defender steering column and welded it back together... just a little bit shorter than original
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-24.JPG

then we cut the inner shaft, all the original bearings were re-used, it makes it work really well
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-24.JPG

fits together nicely :)
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-24.JPG

we smoke more cigarettes and decide what position it should be in
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-24.JPG

and make a mount for it - nice and easy

Are you using fully hydraulic steering? I think that is Orbitrol -valve in the picture?

I think that Finnish orienteering rules do not allow fully hydraulic steering? Hope I'm wrong.

www.alanmiehet.com #1

dollythelw 26.04.2008 09:07

yes - we use orbitrol again this year, maybe after Ladoga we will make a different system. we made it in a way that means we can take the orbitrol away and have enough space a mechanical link. Personally I prefer full hydro, its stronger!

nothing exceeds like excess....

kivinen 27.04.2008 08:02

I like full hydraulic steering also. After I change to that, there has been no problems with steering. On the otherhand, even mechanical link would hold for me now, because steering is in pieces on the floor.

dollythelw 28.04.2008 14:56

ahh I know that feeling well Kivinen!

it was a busy weekend

we take the gearbox out to be built
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-26.JPG

make a new pushrod for the brake
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-26.JPG

because we have to move the master cylinder and servo forward to clear everything, a little extension tube and the job is done :)
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-26.JPG

the roof gets trimmed to the right size, it will get filler and paint next
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-26.JPG

the gearbox comes back - we spend more time measuring this and making parts to make sure the clutch works ok
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...08-04-26_1.JPG

now it works....
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-27.JPG

we make some changes to the transfer box
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-27.JPG

and start to spray some paint
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-27.JPG

I dont like spraying tubes - its not nice
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-27.JPG

I dont think we have a problem with ground clearance
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-27.JPG

the clutch is fitted (finally!!)
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-28.JPG

seat belts, battery box, floors all get fitted
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-28.JPG

back suspension and mudguards get fitted
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-28.JPG

looks a bit nicer than friday
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-28.JPG

starting to paint the body panels - getting out of bed in time to go to work on Monday isnt easy
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...2008-04-27.JPG

nothing exceeds like excess....
