Introduction to Kyykkä

Made by David Agar

Kyykkä is an old Finnish game of skittles similar to several games of the kind played throughout europe since the Middle Ages. It was probably most popular in the Karelia region where it was revived in the 1950s with the creation of the Karelian Cultural Society. Kyykkä contests have been organized annually by the Finnish Karelian Skittles Association and there are about 650 registered players. Former Finnish president, Urho Kekkonen, donated a silver cup to the organization as a trophy.

OBJECT OF THE GAME

There are apparently many variations of the game but here only one will be discussed. Kyykkä is played with two teams of four players each. The object of the game is for each team to try to empty the other team's playing court of kyykkä pieces, or pins, by throwing a stick or club. The first team that manages to knock out all the other teams pins wins the game.

EQUIPMENT

Each player needs a wooden stick or club which resembles a baseball bat and each team requires 20 pins. The pins are wooden cylinders which are about the size of a pop/beer can.

RULES OF THE GAME

The playing area consists of two 6x4 meter sized playing courts between which there is a seven meter space. The longest sides of each court face each other. Each team arranges their 20 pins in an evenly spaced row on the front edge of their court. The front edge is considered the sides which face each other. The players throw their clubs from inside their own court. The first throw is valued. To begin, team 1 players throw their clubs into team 2's court trying to knock the opposing teams' pins out of the court. When the clubs have been thrown team 2 retrieves them and then throws them and their own clubs into team 1 's court trying to knock out their pins. The game continues in this way until all the other teams pins are outside of the court.
