Kim goes to his summer house so I have to write this in English (sorry), when he has finished all his cider and beer he will come back and write in Finnish

last year we make this car

but we sell it, so now we make a new car

How do you make that engine water proof for deep waters? Or is it so light weight that it flows on water?

we move the ECU to a nice dry place and put it in a waterproof box, the electrics are all GM "Weatherpack" connectors, the spark plug caps are a really good fit and are sealed with silicone grease, there is no distributor to worry about - hopefully it will be ok, when it is finished I drive the car into a lake, turn it off 30 minutes and come back and start it, if it doesnt work then theres a problem

its been fun learning - its the first time we use tube like this! we use a computer program called bend tec pro to help us calculate the tubes, without it we would have made a lot of mistakes!

wheels have arrived now
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-2/944469/03-03-08_15502008-03-06.JPG

we try to keep the car nice and light for the swamps so we use alumium and fibreglass a lot, Mike came and made the mould for the roof section
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-2/944469/DSCF13262007-03-10.JPG

about 80% of the car is Tig welded - its been a long time since I did this, I need more practice!

The seats are from a defender, my wife found them - they are so ugly no one else wanted to buy them so we got them cheap :)

we drive prototype class so we use 39.5x18x16.5, the wheels are internal double beadlock - hopefully if we have enough time we make the CTIS (Central Tyre Inflation) but there is so much to do and not so much time left

we start making panels - many of them!

We use the original rover chassis because it saves us about 1 week of work - I dont think 4 link is so useful for trophy raid, its more difficult to keep from breaking, needs more spare parts and we dont need that much suspension travel.

glad you like it - we fly 2 flags when we race, The Finnish Cross and the English cross, without the Team in Finland this car does not work, Kim, Mikko, Harry Potter, Kai, James and Vili :)

the wheels are Stazworks, John makes some good stuff (maybe a little bit heavy but you can drive fast into big rocks and they survive

we make some hinges for the doors

http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-2/944469/DSCF14302007-03-21.JPG

I will fill this hole with the petrol tank, a locker for rope, a back winch, radiator, spare fuel, hi-lift, chainsaw...... shit, maybe not enough space lol

Simple and cost effective. Nice :)

Do those arms have any significant flex when working? Aluminium is soft, but I think that with steel you would have start easy and roll back and forth several times before wanted depth is achieved. I guess I use similar, but much sturdier design so I get wanted rill depth on a one run.

the tool doesnt flex with 1.6mm ally, it doesnt like 3.0mm though - it doesnt seem to mind 1mm steel but thicker than that would need something chunkier, burn a horseshoe out of some 30mm plate?

Time to start working on the petrol tank, we make a flange with bolt holes in it and weld the flange to the top of the tank, the thick steel plate is clamped on to minimise distortion during welding and keep the gasket face nice and flat
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-2/944469/DSCF14742007-03-24.JPG

the cover plate needs holes drilled to fit the feed pipes from the fuel pumps and the return fuel line
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-2/944469/DSCF14822007-03-24.JPG

we dont have the right sizes of aluminium and no time to try and find it, but we do have welders and a lathe - so we make things fit :)

Repro - it's 2 pieces of steel welded together (4mm and 2mm), it's so the total plate is only "thick" in the places that see the highest amount of force (it saves a little weight if you build like this)

2853 is the model we have, they cost £109 (about 120 euro) over here, the post cost to ship 3 would be about 35 euro. Maybe not so different in the end after all?

it looks nice, its waterproof and its a lot cheaper than buying lots of different guages- I think its pretty good value for money and it means I have less things to look at in the cab, thats good - I spend more time looking where Im going then :)

http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-2/944469/DSCF18792008-04-07.JPG

we make a place for the pillow block to live, to get round the gearbox we must use a 2 piece propshaft at the front
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-2/944469/DSCF18772008-04-07.JPG

The Back axle is finished, it needs paint and everything bolted back into it but that wont take long

We cut some steel up and burn out some holes
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-2/944469/DSCF18832008-04-08.JPG

then we look at it (we spend too much time just looking at things )
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-2/944469/DSCF18952008-04-09.JPG

burn a hole and put a flitch tube into it to make it stronger
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-2/944469/DSCF18992008-04-09.JPG

and then give it somewhere to live :)
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-2/944469/DSCF19032008-04-09.JPG
getting the panhard rod this flat means the axle only moves 1mm to the side for every 25mm up or down travel, its not too bad

R u gonna use hydraulic winch this time also? Has there been any problems with those, hot oils, brokened hoses, etc. ?
And what if U cant start engine, how do you use winch then, or is there emergency electric motor for hydraulic pump to case like this?
Lots of stupid questions

theres no such thing as stupid questions - only stupid answers

yes we use hydraulics again this year, the winch has a really good combination of power, reliability and speed its difficult to find another way thats better for us.

we have no problems with broken parts - Petals winch was used a lot for long hard pulls, many many times and it just kept going and never slowed down, we never stopped it or had to use a snail for a double pull :) if you make sure you have good pipes of the right size, a nice big hydraulic tank and use HVI46 oil (it stays stable even at high temperatures) then its very very very reliable. One of our friends winched almost all of a 17km stage at Ladoga in 2006 using the same winch.

if the engine stops then we are in trouble and we have to use the hi-lift to winch us out we dont have have the time to make an emergency electric pump at the moment (maybe we do this later). You can use the pump from a 12 volt small truck as a backup , it would be more sensible to put an electric winch on the back of the car so if the engine dies you can get out of trouble but I like the power to much to give it up

If the car is waterproof then you have nothing to worry about; test the car in deep water before competition - drive in, turn off the engine, leave the car underwater for 30 minutes and then go back and start the engine - if it passes this test then its not going to be a problem, so far so good but who knows - this type of engine is new to us

Kimple - why do you always get the words "tent" and "ass" mixed up?

Thanks Jare, we build like we race - as a team! Everyone does what they are good at, most of the time its Vince and me (Vince specialises in Mig welding, I do the crap tig work and between us we make all the steel and aluminium parts) I do the overall design and maths (which explains why things look so strange then theres John - he does the electrical and electronics, Mike - he's the fibreglass guy, they come and do things when there are things to do. My wife Zuzana feeds us all and makes lots of coffee. On the Finnish side Kimple and Mise are making the front winch, some friends in the US are acting as a postal service to help us to get parts - its an international collection of oddballs working together.

we all have day jobs - the only time we get to work is in the night time but we try to work fast, sometimes its daylight before we leave the workshop... then you get that "ahhh 45minutes of sleep before work" feeling... yay

we had a couple of problems to deal with yesterday, we found out some of the gearbox parts that were supposed to be on order....weren't....

so we have to ring a lot of friends and use a lot of favours to get stuff quickly, but it should be ok now

the only other thing we got done was starting to mount all the parts for inside the petrol tank, we need 4 pipes (2 for the feeds from the in-tank pumps, 1 as a return from the pumps and 1 for the breather), the pipes are 1mm thick and the plate is 10mm- Im out of practice because it wasnt easy to weld

we also make the hole for the fuel level guage - this works with the dashboard so we can get scared about how much petrol is left the last hole is for a petrol proof electrical connector to get 12 volts to the fuel pumps

John found some aluminium tube and we cut this up - each piece will hold its own fuel pump

we wanted to get the petrol tank finished so some more welding
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-2/944469/DSCF20222008-04-17.JPG

and Vince makes some clips from stainless steel and some straps from a trucks air tank, these hold the tank down in the car

we dont want the electrical connector to get loose so we use lockwire

just needs the cables done and the rubber pipe putting in place

its not easy in England - the government are changing the rules all the time, we have a tradition of small companies making cars over here, some of them are kits you can build at home and others are mini car manufaturers (Noble, Caterham, Westfield etc), these will all be killed off eventually - but while we can build cars, we will

we got the pedal box mounted and start panelling in
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-2/944469/DSCF21112008-04-23.JPG

tricky little panel to make but Vince likes to make things like this
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-2/944469/DSCF21142008-04-23.JPG

the alternator gets moved 30cm higher and the new damper goes on - this is keyed and will power the hydraulic system
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-2/944469/DSCF21092008-04-23.JPG

we finally get the gear shifter turret so we can put the last bracing tube in place
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-2/944469/DSCF21072008-04-23.JPG

we cut a stip of steel, rill it and drill some holes
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-2/944469/DSCF21052008-04-22.JPG

Tig some spacers to it and put the little gearboxes on the back
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-2/944469/DSCF21182008-04-23.JPG

so now we have 3 windscreen wipers :)

Thanks Jyty! I wondered what happened to that car, it was the green one?

we got a bit more done last night..
Handbrake lever fitted - mush more comfortable than Landrover original position
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-2/944469/DSCF21502008-04-25.JPG

lots of these lugs were welded on - we use them to hold the mudguards
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-2/944469/DSCF21492008-04-25.JPG

the last of the bump cans got welded up
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-2/944469/DSCF21452008-04-25.JPG

we cut down the original defender steering column and welded it back together... just a little bit shorter than original
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-2/944469/DSCF21192008-04-24.JPG

then we cut the inner shaft, all the original bearings were re-used, it makes it work really well
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-2/944469/DSCF21232008-04-24.JPG

fits together nicely :)
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-2/944469/DSCF21252008-04-24.JPG

we smoke more cigarettes and decide what position it should be in

Are you using fully hydraulic steering? I think that is Orbitrol -valve in the picture?

I think that Finnish orienteering rules do not allow fully hydraulic steering? Hope I'm wrong.

yes - we use orbitrol again this year, maybe after Ladoga we will make a different system. we made it in a way that means we can take the orbitrol away and have enough space a mechanical link. Personally I prefer full hydro, its stronger!

I like full hydraulic steering also. After I change to that, there has been no problems with steering. kiitos 88 :)

why do we use manual gearbox Arska-tehtaalta? I like them more than automatic, if you break 1 gear then the gearbox will still work, if it gets very hot - it will still work, it doesnt mind if its upside down - it will still work, if it gets a lot of water in it - no problem
for me personally I find it easier to drive manual in swamp than automatic, I get to hear from the noise of the engine how hard it has to work so I can be soooooo gentle and not rip the surface, its also good with manual when you cannot see your wheels - when the pedal in up then you know the wheels are turning, you dont get that feedback with automatic. I dont think one is better than the other - its just preference and what Im used to :)

apiaani - we use defender seats because they are a lot more comfortable than racing seats, it sounds a little stupid but we drive for long periods and comfort becomes important also these are cheap, they recline, they're not too heavy, you can pull the bottom piece out without tools (in order to reach the battery) and most important they fit my 290kg fat ass!
I dont really like race seatbelts - I know they are safer but we get in and out of the car a lot and I like the fact I can reach something in the car without having to take off the belt, Kim found some nice belts that are race harness but still move - but we cant afford these
