BASEL/ZEININGEN Piikkilangalla, valvontakameroilla ja liiketunnistimilla varustettu kaksinkertainen verkkoaita ympäröi pientä peltotilkkua salaisessa paikassa Sveitsin maaseudulla.

Valkoisella muovilla päällystetty kasvutunneli jakaa pellon kahteen osaan. Syyskuun lopussa tunneli ja sen ympäristö ovat täynnä täydessä kukassa rehottavia kannabiskasveja.

– Tämä on Euroopan ensimmäinen laillinen hasisviljelmä, peltoa esittelevä Lino Cereghetti sanoo seistessään pusikoiden keskellä.

Euroopassa on myyty kannabista tähänkin asti, mutta aineet on hankittu pääosin rikollisilta. Nyt Sveitsi kokeilee, miten päihdekannabiksen laillinen tuotanto ja jakelu voisi toimia.

Säännellyllä myynnillä olisi tarkoitus vähentää laittomaan kannabiskauppaan liittyviä haittoja, kuten järjestäytyneen rikollisuuden kasvua ja epäpuhtaiden tuotteiden pääsyä markkinoille.

Laillinen kasvattaminen ei kuitenkaan ole helppoa tiukan viranomaissääntelyn ja laaduntarkkailun takia. Rikolliset puolestaan eivät säännöistä piittaa, joten heidän tuottamansa pilvi voi sisältää terveydelle haitallisia aineita.

Sveitsissä kymmenisen kaupunkia suunnittelee kokeilevansa kannabiksen laillista myyntiä osana tieteellisiä tutkimuksia. Myynnin on määrä alkaa viimeistään keväällä ja kesällä 2023.

Baselin, Zürichin ja Bernin kaupungit ovat valinneet Puren kannabiksen tuottajaksi pilottihankkeisiinsa.

Cereghettin mukaan hasisviljelmä on salaisessa paikassa, jotta kutsumattomat vieraat eivät löytäisi sitä. Hän kertoo, että pellon hälytysjärjestelmä on yhdistetty poliisille.

Virkavallan pitäisi saapua paikalle minuutissa, jos joku yrittäisi murtautua aidan läpi. Kukaan ei kuulemma ole yrittänyt tehdä niin.

Cereghettin mukaan tämä viljelmä tuottaa hasista noin 25 kiloa. Tuote on tarkoitus myydä viiden gramman erissä Baselin tutkimuksen koehenkilöille.

Kannabispelto on suojattu aidalla, valvontakameroilla ja hälytysjärjestelmällä.

Pellolla kasvaa useita eri lajikkeita.

Ikävä löytö lykkäsi myynnin alkua
Ensimmäisenä luvan myynnin aloittamiseen sai siis Basel.

Kaksi ja puoli vuotta kestävän Weed Care -nimisen tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää, miten säännelty myynti vaikuttaa koehenkilöiden terveyteen ja kannabiksen kulutukseen.

Baselissa myynnin piti alkaa jo syyskuussa, mutta laaduntarkkailun yhteydessä Puren kasvattamasta kukasta löytyi vähäisiä määriä hyönteisten torjunta-ainetta.

Sveitsin lain mukaan pilottitutkimusten yhteydessä myytävän laillisen kannabiksen pitää olla luomua, eikä se saa sisältää yhtään torjunta-aineita.

Viranomaiset päättivät, että myyntikokeilua on lykättävä kunnes tarjolle saadaan puhdasta tuotetta.

Lino Cereghetti kertoo, että Pure kasvatti kannabiksen luomumenetelmin ilman torjunta-aineita. Silti kyseisen viljelmän maaperään oli päätynyt jäämiä kasvinsuojeluaineesta, joka on yleinen tavallisessa peltoviljelyssä Sveitsissä.

Kannabiskasvit imivät kemikaalijäämät itseensä, ja ne paljastuivat vasta valmiista tuotteesta laaduntarkkailussa laboratoriossa.

Hänen mukaansa ongelmana on, että tuotteeseen voi päätyä kemikaaleja, koska naapuriviljelijä suihkuttaa torjunta-aineita omille pelloilleen.

Cereghetti kertoo, että torjunta-aineiden löytyminen kukinnosta on käynnistänyt keskustelun siitä, millaiset sallitut torjunta-aineiden raja-arvot pitäisi asettaa pilottitutkimusten yhteydessä myytävälle kannabikselle.

Hän arvioi, että raja-arvot tullaan määrittelemään sellaisiksi, että kannabiksen kasvattajat pystyvät niitä noudattamaan.

Piloteilla kerätään tietoa mahdollista sääntelyä varten
Sveitsissä kannabis on käytetyin laiton huumausaine. Joka kolmas sveitsiläinen on kokeillut sitä ainakin kerran elämässään. THL:n mukaan suomalaisistakin noin 800 000 on kokeillut kannabista.

Baselissa on vajaat 200 000 asukasta. Viranomaisten arvion perusteella heistä noin 8 000–10 000 käyttäisi kannabista.

– Laiton markkina kukoistaa. Meillä ei ole siihen mitään kontrollia, emmekä tunne kannabistuotteiden laatua. Siksi meidän pitää tehdä jotain, sanoo Regine Steinauer.

Hän työskentelee Basel-Stadtin kantonin terveysviraston riippuvuusyksikön johtajana.

Zürichissa viihdekäyttäjille tarkoitetussa huumeiden analysointipalvelussa on havaittu(siirryt toiseen palveluun), että Sveitsin markkinoilla liikkuu esimerkiksi synteettisillä kannabinoideilla jatkettua kevytkannabista.

Jotkut diilerit myyvät sitä tavallisena päihdekannabiksena. Tämä aiheuttaa terveysriskejä, sillä laboratoriossa kehitettyjen synteettisten kannabinoidien vaikutukset ovat arvaamattomia, ja ne voivat jopa tappaa käyttäjän.

Baselin tutkimukseen valitaan 370 täysi-ikäistä koehenkilöä, jotka voivat ostaa kannabista laillisesti yhdeksästä eri apteekista. Heidän pitää olla jo ennestään kannabiksen käyttäjiä.

Koehenkilöt saavat käyttää laillista kannabista vain yksityistiloissa. Aineen myyminen eteenpäin on kielletty. Tarkoituksena on, että kuluttaja käyttää itse apteekista ostamansa kannabiksen.

Pilven käyttökulttuuriin usein kuitenkin kuuluu sätkien ja piippujen kierrättäminen ringissä. Steinauer toteaa, että tuotteiden jakaminen ei ole houkuttelevaa, koska koehenkilöt voivat ostaa vain rajoitetun määrän kannabista kuukaudessa.

Tutkimuksen aikana osallistujat vastaavat säännöllisesti verkkokyselyihin, jotta tutkijat voivat seurata heidän terveydentilansa ja käyttönsä muutoksia.

– Toivomme, että tutkimus johtaa faktoihin, jotka perustuvat todistusaineistoon. Niiden pohjalta voimme keskustella sääntelystä Sveitsissä, Steinauer sanoo.

Hän painottaa, että Sveitsi ei harkitse kannabiksen täyttä laillistamista, vaan aineen tuomista laittomilta markkinoilta sääntelyn piiriin.

Laillinen tuotanto on hankalaa
Sveitsin lisäksi Hollannissa on yritetty käynnistää pilottihanke, jossa kokeillaan päihdekannabiksen laillista tuotantoa ja myyntiä.

Kokeilun piti alkaa jo viime vuonna, mutta se on toistuvasti lykkääntynyt tuotanto-ongelmien takia.

Hollannin pilotin tuottajiksi valitut kannabisyritykset eivät ole pystyneet aloittamaan riittävän laajamittaista viljelyä ja pankit ovat kieltäytyneet avaamasta tilejä osalle niistä. DutchNews-sivuston(siirryt toiseen palveluun) mukaan pankit ovat huolestuneita rahanpesusta ja rikollisen toiminnan tukemisesta.

Tällä hetkellä näyttää siltä, että Hollannin pilotti voisi alkaa ehkä ensi vuoden jälkimmäisellä puoliskolla.

Tässä vaiheessa myös suurin osa Sveitsin pilottihankkeista on odottavalla kannalla. Liittovaltion terveysvirastolta FOPH:lta toivotaan päätöksiä. Esimerkiksi Zürich odottaa yhä hyväksyntää pilottitutkimukselleen.

Hasisviljelmällä seisova Lino Cereghetti toteaa, että tätä peltoa on käytetty luomuviljelyyn vuosikymmeniä.

– Maaperä ja kasvit on testattu. Pelto ei ole saastunut, Cereghetti vakuuttaa.

Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa has commissioned a US$27 million Swiss Bioceuticals Limited Medicinal Cannabis Farm and Processing Plant in Mount Hampden, Mashonaland West Province.

Speaking at the launch, Mnangagwa also implored investors in cannabis farming and processing to quickly operationalize their permits and licences for the benefit of the country’s economy.

Only 15 of the 57 cannabis permits issued by the Zimbabwe government since 2018 have been activated, raising fears some of the permit holders are holding the permits for speculative purposes.

“I extend my profound congratulations to the Swiss Biocieuticals Limited for this timely investment in the medicinal cannabis farm, processing plant and value chain, worth US$27 million,” Mnangagwa said.

“This milestone is testimony of the successes of my Government’s Engagement and Re-engagement Policy. It further demonstrates the confidence that Swiss companies have in our economy through their continued investment in Zimbabwe.

“To date, investments, support and partnerships from entities linked to the Swiss Confederation (Switzerland), span across sectors such as agriculture, cement manufacturing, agriculture value chain industries and food processing as well as in spheres such as governance, institutional building and the preservation of the country’s cultural heritage.”

He added: “Leveraging on the Swiss – Zimbabwe Business Chamber launched in 2021, I urge all stakeholders to scale up efforts to see more investment and trade between businesses of the two countries. As Government, we recognise that Switzerland is one of the leading European investors and we are ready to receive more investments from that country.”

I applaud the Swiss Bioceuticals Limited for the commitment, hard work and professional manner in which it has successfully and speedily carried out this project.

He commended the investor for speedily executing its operations from the time it got its operating licence.

“Since the granting of the licence to produce medical cannabis and permit to operate in 2020 and 2021, respectively, five hectares of land for the production of medicinal cannabis have been established under greenhouses. I exhort the company to accelerate its plans to increase the hectarage to 15 by the end of this year, towards the realisation of the target of 50 hectares by 2023.”

At the Mt Hamped factory, Swiss Bioceuticals limited has constructed a state-of-the-art medicinal cannabis processing plant, fitted with the first line of medicinal cannabis oil processing.

It is also equipped with a cannabis oil processing line aimed at stimulating bio-medical solutions and pharmaceutical products for both local and international markets.

MONSANTO BAYER ARE MANEUVERING TO TAKE OVER THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY

It has been rumored for years that Monsanto plans to take over the cannabis industry with genetic engineering just as they’ve taken over the corn and soy industries. Although they have always denied having any intentions to do so, at this point it is unlikely that anybody really believes them. In contrast, many in the cannabis sphere are prepared to resist any kind of GMO takeover of marijuana by Monsanto or any of their cohorts.

Evidence is mounting, though, which points strongly to the notion that Monsanto does indeed plan to take control of the cannabis plant, and it doesn’t look good for medical users, or anyone planning on getting into the industry.

Former Nazi Collaborator Bayer Buys Out Monsanto for $66 Billion

You may remember hearing back in September that Bayer, the largest pharmaceutical company in the world, made a deal to buy out Monsanto for $66 billion. Although Monsanto was voted the most evil company in the world in 2013 and its reputation has continued to fall since, Bayer still went ahead with the buyout.

A merger between these two companies is unsurprising, as though they both have long histories of involvement with Nazism and chemical weapons like agent orange which have devastated Vietnam since the war. In fact, Bayer began as a break-off company of the infamous IG Farben, which produced the chemical weapons used on the Jews during the Nazi reign. After the war, Farben was forced to break up into several companies, including BASF, Hoeschst, and Bayer.

Soon after at the Nuremberg trials, 24 Farben executives were sent to prison for crimes against humanity. However, in a matter of just 7 years each of them was released and began filling high positions in each of the former Farben companies, and many of them began working for the Russian, British, and American governments through a joint intelligence venture called “Operation Paperclip”.

As documents show, IG Farben was intimately involved with the human experimental atrocities committed by Mengele at Auschwitz. After all these years, Bayer is now richer and more powerful than their predecessor company I.G. Farben ever was.

Monsanto And Miracle-Gro Have Intimate Business Ties

According to Big Buds Magazine, Monsanto and Scotts Miracle-Gro have a “deep business partnership” and plan on taking over the cannabis industry. Hawthorne, a front group for Scotts, has already purchased three of the major cannabis growing companies: General Hydroponics, Botanicare, and Gavita. Many other hydroponics companies have also reported attempted buyouts by Hawthorne.

“They want to bypass hydroponics retail stores…When we said we won’t get in bed with them they said, ‘Well, we could just buy your whole company like we did with Gavita and do whatever we want.’” – Hydroponics Lighting Representative

Jim Hagedorn, CEO of Scotts Miracle-Gro, has even said that he plans to “invest, like, half a billion in [taking over] the pot business… It is the biggest thing I’ve ever seen in lawn and garden.”

He has also invested in companies such as Leaf, which grows cannabis in an electronically regulated indoor terrarium accessible via smartphone.

Bayer and Monsanto Trade Industry Secrets On Producing GMO Marijuana

It is logical that Bayer, being the parent company, would work together with Monsanto in order to share secrets which would advance mutual business. Many people in the cannabis industry have been warning about this, including Michael Straumietis, founder and owner of Advanced Nutrients.

“Monsanto and Bayer share information about genetically modifying crops,” Straumietis notes. “Bayer partners with GW Pharmaceuticals, which grows its own proprietary marijuana genetics. It’s logical to conclude that Monsanto and Bayer want to create GMO marijuana.” – Michael Straumietis

Conclusion

It is possible that Bayer and Monsanto could create a monopoly on marijuana seeds in the same way that they have created a monopoly on corn and soy. Through immense corporate power and the enforcement of international patent law, these corporations could place themselves in a position of total control over cannabis as a medicine as well as for recreational use by using the same model as they do with the food crops they control.

But not all hope is lost. There is still a chance to fight back against the Bayer-Monsanto monopoly by boycotting genetically engineered products, Miracle-Gro and other Scotts brand products, Bayer pharmaceuticals, and companies that do business with any of these. If you buy cannabis seeds, they can be stored for years to be used at a later date or if you live in an area where it is legal, grow your own, while supporting hydroponics and nutrient companies that don’t do business with these corporate behemoths.

Pfizer is to enter the medical cannabis industry betting on a promising cannabinoid-based bowel disease treatment.

Last week, American multinational pharmaceutical and biotechnology corporation Pfizer signed an agreement with the clinical-stage company Arena Pharmaceuticals for a total equity value of around $6.7 billion.

Under the agreement terms, Pfizer acquires all shares for $100 per share in an all-cash transaction. Moreover, the press release reads that the proposed transaction will be subject to customary closing conditions, including receipt of regulatory approvals and approval by Arena's stockholders.

Arena Pharmaceuticals is a biotech company with one pipeline dedicated to cannabinoid-type therapeutics. The core of its cannabis operation consists of Olorinab (APD371), an investigational, oral, full agonist of the cannabinoid type 2 receptor (CB2), which aims to treat patients with diseases affecting the stomach and intestine. As Arena's website states, Olorinab is an investigational drug and is not currently approved for use by any health authority.

Arena's team is developing this cannabinoid-based drug with an initial focus on visceral pain associated with gastrointestinal disorders. Arena's website reads that this compound, through its selectivity for CB2 versus CB1, is under investigation for pain relief without psychoactive adverse effects.

CB1 and CB2 receptors bind to the endocannabinoid system, a complex cell-signaling system. These receptors are present throughout the human body. Endocannabinoids, such as THC and CBD, can bind to both receptors to signal that the endocannabinoid system needs to take action. However, the effects depend on the endocannabinoid receptor and the cannabinoid's interaction with the receptor.

Arena's portfolio also includes other non-cannabinoid drug pipelines, focusing on developing innovative potential therapies to treat several immuno-inflammatory diseases.

By acquiring Arena, Pfizer enters the medical cannabis industry and joins other Big Pharma companies in the cannabis space.

Big pharmaceutical companies have entered the market through several operations in the past years.

Canadian research and development (R&D) company Avicanna became a resident company at Jonhson & Johnson's JLabs in Toronto in 2017.

One year later, Canadian Tilray went global through an agreement with Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis AG to develop and distribute its medical cannabis products in legal jurisdictions worldwide.

In May 2021, global biopharmaceutical company Jazz Pharmaceutical completed the acquisition of GW Pharmaceuticals, the developer of Epidiolex, the first FDA-authorized CBD medicine for treating children with Lennox-Gastaut and Dravet syndromes.

Like Big Tobacco companies, Big Pharma's interest in the medical cannabis industry grows with the space's fast-evolving cannabinoids industry. R&D on cannabinoids is achieving exciting results in the treatment application. For this reason, it is expected to see further involvement of pharmaceutical companies in the medical cannabis industry in the following years.

The Inside Story Of Papa John's Toxic Culture

Two years ago John Schnatter fancied himself untouchable. He was CEO of Papa John’s, the nationwide pizza chain he founded, and served as its ubiquitous TV pitchman. The business had grown to 5,000 stores and $1.7 billion in revenue, and his fortune tallied some $950 million. “We see news story after news story of CEOs who run companies into the ground,” Schnatter scoffed in his 2016 autobiography, which chronicled the business’ rise.


Then Schnatter began to do exactly that. The world already knows of his two biggest flare-ups. Last November, he criticized the NFL’s handling of national anthem protests, calling the whole affair a “debacle.” Papa John’s shares crashed 11% in hours and kept falling, Schnatter lost his CEO title and franchise sales dropped an estimated 5% or more. Then, in July, while reporting this story, Forbes learned that Schnatter had used the N-word and made other controversial remarks on a conference call two months prior. On July 11, the day that news broke, he resigned as chairman.

But the problems run far deeper. Based on interviews with 37 current and former Papa John’s employees—including numerous executives and board members—Schnatter’s alleged behavior ranges from spying on his workers to sexually inappropriate conduct, which has resulted in at least two confidential settlements.

To protect himself, Schnatter, 56, installed loyalists in the firm’s top ranks, who enabled its “bro” culture. That includes international president Tim O’Hern, a close friend of Schnatter’s from Jeffersonville High School, as well as current CEO Steve Ritchie, who worked directly for Schnatter for three years and has run daily operations since 2014. “John got Steve to where he is. Steve is not going to do anything to turn on John,” says a former senior executive.


“Papa John’s has effectively been a public company operated like it is privately owned,” a veteran employee says. “Nothing is happening there unless John wants it to happen.”

Under Ritchie’s and Schnatter’s watch, multiple insiders describe a laundry list of transgressions: Female employees were mocked and asked if they were menstruating. Male executives made references to “gangbangs” and comments about whether women wanted “to jump on the train.” Three former employees say Ritchie was present when these types of remarks were made and just laughed along.

Reached through a representative, Schnatter disputed most of this story. Papa John’s did not respond to repeated requests for comment. Ritchie, for his part, did not respond to a request for comment. And O’Hern contested portions of this story, though he confirmed his close ties to Schnatter. After this story originally published, a Papa John's spokesman issued this comment: “As previously announced, a special committee of the Board of Directors, comprised solely of independent directors, has retained an outside firm to oversee an audit and investigation of the culture at the company and to make recommendations for whatever changes may be necessary. We take this matter seriously. If anything is found to be wrong, we are determined to take appropriate action.”


Since roughly 2013, corporate employees at Papa John's have signed nondisclosure agreements barring them from discussing Schnatter’s personal life. Other confidentiality and nondisparagement contracts and mandatory arbitration agreements further discouraged people from speaking out. So when Schnatter wrote his memoir, Papa: The Story of Papa John’s Pizza, no one could openly dispute it.

Now the full story is being told for the first time. Forbes spent months piecing it all together. No sources cited in this article approached us; all were contacted directly. Most spoke on the condition of anonymity, citing legal shackles or fear of retaliation.

Says a recently departed executive, “The only people that are staying there are the people that can’t get a good job elsewhere.”

o understand Papa John’s current state, one needs to understand how it was built. John Schnatter grew up in Jeffersonville, Indiana, the son of a clerk and a serial entrepreneur. In 1984, he installed a pizza oven at his dad’s tavern, Mick’s Lounge, and started churning out pies. The pizza sold well, and he opened a stand-alone shop the following year. “I built that first Papa John’s. And then we built a pizza empire,” Schnatter writes in his book.


Early employees credit Schnatter for fueling growth. “It was the American dream. We went from 23 stores to 900, and they continued to grow after I left,” says former president Dan Holland, who helped take the company public in 1993 and departed two years later.

Money changed things. Schnatter moved the firm into a luxurious new headquarters in Louisville, Kentucky, in the late 1990s. When he commissioned a fresco for one of its ceilings, he had his face painted into the plaster. His own office was outfitted with black marble and a fireplace. Schnatter sometimes conducted meetings from his exercise bike and was prone to outbursts. In one case, he moved a scorned executive’s parking spot to the very back of the garage. (Reached through a representative, Schnatter denied the incident.) “John had this tendency: When he was done with you, he was done with you,” says Donna Alcorn, who left Papa John’s in 2010 as a senior vice president and says she had a positive experience overall. “That’s why he’s gone through so many executive teams in his life.”

One former executive says the married Schnatter would disappear for days on work trips, stirring suspicion that he was “hooking up with girls.” (Schnatter denies this.) In 1999, a mobile phone representative named Lesli Workman filed a lawsuit alleging that Schnatter groped her after meeting her at a party in a Louisville park, proceeded to stalk her, then asked her boss to send her to Papa John’s to discuss a possible phone contract. Schnatter denied the allegations and filed a counterclaim alleging that she tried to extort $5 million from him and Papa John’s. The case ended with a confidential settlement.

In 2005, after three years of falling profits, Schnatter stepped down as CEO for the first time. Nigel Travis, then the president and COO of Blockbuster, was hired to fill the role. Schnatter remained chairman but was relocated to offices 20 minutes away. In exile, he fought for control. During annual budget meetings with the board, for instance, he would draft separate budget proposals and force board members to choose between him and his CEO. (Schnatter says his budget ended up being more accurate.) In another case, at the eleventh hour he torpedoed an agreement with franchisees that Travis had spent months negotiating. When asked about the friction, Travis is diplomatic. “Most of the time John and I had a very cordial relationship,” he says.


Over time, Schnatter started to visit the main campus more often to learn what was going on. He allegedly recruited Papa John’s employees to spy on their colleagues. He read workers’ emails, according to two sources with knowledge of the episodes, and sometimes conducted business from disposable phones. Schnatter denies that he accessed emails or recruited employees to spy on each other, but admits he occasionally used disposable phones for reasons of “corporate security.”

Travis left to become CEO of Dunkin’ Brands in 2008, and Schnatter returned to power. He quickly installed new executives. Among them was his former schoolmate Tim O’Hern, who had spent the previous few years working for a small real estate company owned by Schnatter. O’Hern had served as a Papa John’s vice president until the mid-2000s, when he was allegedly asked to leave the company for mistreating employees, a former senior executive says. (O’Hern disputes that allegation, saying he never mistreated anyone and was never asked to leave the company, though he acknowledges that an investigation into his conduct took place around the time he departed. He says he does not recall the nature of the inquiry.)

Either way, after returning to Papa John’s in 2009, O’Hern became a central figure in the Schnatter orbit. And he never left. “He’s John’s hench guy that does whatever John wants,” a former executive says.

ust after reclaiming CEO duties, Schnatter attended the NCAA Final Four in Detroit. During the trip there was an incident with a 24-year-old female Papa John’s marketing employee that resulted in a second confidential settlement and the employee’s swift departure. Three sources tell Forbes they know of additional settlements between Schnatter and women involving inappropriate conduct, though details could not be confirmed by publication time. (Schnatter disputes this.)


A female employee says that Schnatter asked about her bra size and whether she’d slept with her previous boss, and that he never let her pass in a hall without giving her a hug. (He denies this.) A male executive recalls going out to dinner with his wife and bumping into Schnatter at the bar. Schnatter allegedly told the executive that he “had a cute wife, if she’d lose some weight.” Schnatter didn’t remember the incident when confronted by the executive later, and Schnatter now says it didn’t happen.

Schnatter tapped a former executive from Anthem insurance, Jude Thompson, to help run Papa John’s as co-CEO in April 2010. Two former executives claim he got the job because he was one of Schnatter’s buddies. Schnatter denies this. Thompson also disputes that’s why he got the job, saying that he has “a pretty distinguished business career.”

Thompson brought a woman who was not his wife to company events, including the Super Bowl. “That type of behavior would be not just allowable, but encouraged,” a senior executive recalls. Thompson denies the incident. Schnatter tells Forbes that Thompson did indeed bring a mistress to the Super Bowl.


Thompson departed in 2011, after just 12 months as co-CEO. Schnatter tapped a senior vice president, Tony Thompson (no relation to Jude), to be chief operating officer and then president, which multiple sources say ushered in a brief cultural respite. Schnatter stepped back from the day-to-day and the business hummed along. But when Tony Thompson left to run Krispy Kreme in 2014, things changed.

Schnatter installed longtime staffer and vice president Steve Ritchie—who started out as a Papa John’s customer service representative—to be chief operating officer and run daily operations. Ritchie had once worked with Tim O’Hern opening some Papa John’s franchises, then spent 2008 to 2011 consulting at Schnatter’s side investment, a sandwich concept named Calistoga Bakery Café. By 2015 he was Papa John’s president.

Six former executives question Ritchie’s qualifications for the job of president, let alone CEO. His one redeeming trait, they say: fealty. When a Louisville publication named him to its Forty Under 40 list in 2013, Ritchie was asked to name his role model. “John Schnatter,” he answered.

itchie’s watch brought an end to the respite. “The longer he was in that position, the more rapidly the culture declined,” says a recently departed executive. At company off-sites, execs made their crudest jokes, the ones about “gangbangs” and women wanting to “jump on the train.”


But it manifested even back in Louisville. Multiple sources say meetings were filled with profanity and inappropriate comments. Ritchie allegedly never intervened. “These things would happen in meetings and conference rooms and whatever. Steve would just laugh. He would just laugh,” says an individual present during such incidents.

The conduct of Dustin Couts, a longtime operations leader and close friend of O’Hern’s, is one example, three sources say. In one alleged instance, he discussed porn with a female junior employee, one source says; in another he showed inappropriate images to colleagues on his cell phone; in yet another he asked a coworker if she was on her period after she disagreed with him. And he once asked a male colleague, in front of a woman, whether his wedding ring was actually his “cock ring.” Couts didn’t respond to a text message and a phone call requesting comment. Papa John’s also didn’t respond to questions about the allegations.

Ritchie allegedly knew of these types of improprieties. At one company town hall, he referred to Operations Support and Training, the unit Couts headed at the time, as a “frat.” Meanwhile, Couts seemingly suffered no consequences. In fact he got a new title. In May 2018, he was named regional vice president of Papa John’s Asia/Pacific, according to his LinkedIn page.

The culture impacted the business. “[Ritchie] promoted people based on his personal relationship with them versus their results,” says a former executive. Among the inner circle: Tim O’Hern, who was named president of international in May; VP of global technology operations Tim Newton; senior vice president of North American operations Edmond Heelan; and Couts. Some of them are also tight with Schnatter. O’Hern would travel to his lake house using Schnatter’s helicopter, with Couts sometimes tagging along.

One former executive describes Ritchie’s leadership style as “knee-jerk,” and says that he doesn’t consult data. Another says he repeatedly failed to address logistical issues at Papa John’s, for fear of angering Schnatter, who considers himself a master of operations. “You would look at our metrics and find that we had a huge percentage of people getting an inaccurate order,” the executive recalls. But nothing was done. Infrastructure at Papa John’s also lagged behind. “From a technology perspective, it wasn’t the easiest company to work for,” says Mark Nance, who left as vice president of digital solutions in 2016.

he rumor at Papa John’s is that Schnatter made his NFL “debacle” comments in November 2017 to support his close friend Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, who was reportedly feuding with the league’s commissioner, Roger Goodell. (Schnatter denies that was his reason.) In a subsequent all-staff meeting, Schnatter told employees that he wanted to tell Goodell “to get off his ass and show some leadership,” according to an individual who was there. (Schnatter admits he used “words to that effect.”) Partly as a result of his NFL comments, corporate revenue fell 5% in the first quarter versus the prior year. Net income, meanwhile, was down 40%. One Papa John’s franchisee says that, in an attempt to win back lost customers, in recent months the company has implemented more discounting than at any point in its history, and that more operators are positioning to sell than ever. “Things went to hell” after Schnatter’s remarks, recalls an executive who left earlier this year.

Schnatter handed the CEO role to Ritchie on January 1, leading many to believe that he had backed away from the business. In truth, little changed, since Ritchie already ran the day-to-day. If anything, Schnatter actually became “more involved than ever” in an attempt to manage the crisis, says a source close to the company’s top ranks.

This spring, Schnatter feuded with Brandon Rhoten, who was then Papa John’s chief marketing officer, over efforts to reduce Schnatter’s presence in TV advertisements. (Schnatter denies this, and claims Rhoten proposed putting him back in ads; Rhoten did not respond to multiple requests for comment.) Schnatter allegedly bristled at the suggestion. According to a source close to the company, he personally hired a marketing agency to develop ads featuring him that would air in key markets. Rhoten was fired in May. “As soon as he tried to remove John from those commercials, his goose was cooked,” says an individual close to the situation.

Also in May, Schnatter participated in a conference call with marketing firm Laundry Service, in a role-playing exercise intended to avoid another public-relations kerfuffle. During that call, when asked how he would distance himself from racists, Schnatter made remarks he thought were simply practice, but that multiple individuals on the call found offensive, according to a source familiar with the situation. He downplayed his NFL snafu, saying that “Colonel Sanders called blacks n-----s” yet never faced public backlash. He also made reference to his upbringing in Indiana, where, he said, people used to drag African-Americans from trucks, in an apparent attempt to illustrate his aversion to racism. Laundry Service quickly moved to cancel its contract with Papa John’s, says a source with direct knowledge of the situation. (Schnatter says that Papa John’s revoked the contract and that “in both of these contexts, [he] was making a strong statement against racism.”)

After Forbes reported on the incident earlier this month, Schnatter confirmed his use of the N-word and apologized, “regardless of the context.” He stepped down as chairman that night. But two days later, on a TV interview, he walked back the apology and blamed Laundry Service for inducing his use of the slur. “They were promoting that kind of vocabulary,” he said, later adding that, “You know, Forbes is gonna lie.”

he next chapter of the Papa John’s saga is unfolding in real time. As of last week, the company’s partnership with Major League Baseball was indefinitely suspended. Its name will come off the University of Louisville football stadium. Rumors of a buyout are percolating. And Schnatter has vanished from all advertisements. Nearly everyone expects Papa John’s to move on without him.

Except those closest to Schnatter. He is still on the board, owns nearly 30% of shares and has Ritchie, O’Hern and the rest in command. Even if he does back away, the relics of his culture remain.

Schnatter seems intent on retaining influence. He pays for his office space at Papa John’s headquarters, which began as a way to keep a private staff on site. The company is attempting to terminate the agreement, but Schnatter’s representatives say it has no grounds. And on July 12, the day after he resigned as chairman, Schnatter showed up to work as usual.

Wow, great article, a really compelling profile. I'm sure it took quite a bit of time to put together. It really shines a light on what our "culture" or mass consciousness is willing to find acceptable and/or tolerable if it comes from someone in power...blatant sexism, racism, and who knows what else. Interesting. Also curious that he never stops to examine how his actions are effecting people or at the very least, his bottom line.

The storied series between Army and Navy continues Saturday, Dec. 10 for the 123rd meeting on the football field. One of the great rivalries in college sports, Army and Navy are enemies on the ball field, but brothers in arms on the battlefield. Army and Navy sports are known as ‘star competitions’, and no star competition is more well known than the Army-Navy football game.

The Army-Navy game is pageantry and patriotism, and a spectacle and showcase of college sports in its purest form. It’s a most meaningful game and event with the Army Corps of Cadets and Navy Brigade of Midshipmen marching on the field before taking their seats in the stands.

For fans that watch and/or wager, a majority of bettors for this year’s contest are betting on Navy with hopes of one mission and two words - beat Army. But as a Black Knight, the Army players will no doubt fight for the extra yards, stand strong with their backs against the wall and battle for their teammates, classmates and soldiers around the world.

The CBS Sports team covering the 2022 Army-Navy game provides picks and insights into America’s Game.


The leading online sportsbooks including FanDuel show odds with Navy a -2.5 point favorite and a very low total that has dropped down to 32.5 points. The point spread opened Pick ‘em. More bettors in Maryland, where online sports betting started last month, are supporting the Navy Midshipmen out of Annapolis, MD.


Regardless of the winner and loser, enjoy the old-fashioned purity of competition that remains unchanged by time and unencumbered by whatever complications are impacting college football. That includes the large pool of transfer players, and money that is driving conference realignment and impacting rivalries. But fortunately, not the Army-Navy game.

Recent Army-Navy History and 2022 Uniforms
Army and Navy run the old-fashioned wishbone, the triple-option offense. The scheme is actually necessary as the size and caliber of athletes don’t often match-up with the most powerful FBS teams. The option attack with cross blocking and misdirection is unique and often gives the service academies a chance to close the talent gap.

Triple Option Offense Blocking Terms

From 2002-2015, Navy beat Army 14 straight times. Army won the next two meetings as underdog, 21-17 and 14-13. In 2018, Army held all the edges as the favorite for the first time since 2001. The Black Knights (-7) won 17-10 outrushing the Midshipmen 222-127 and Navy kicking a field goal in the final 30 seconds for the point spread push. Navy snapped the 3-game skid in 2019 with a 31-7 win. Army shutout Navy 15-0 in 2020 and last year Navy won 17-13.

The Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy has already be won by Air Force, whose 9-wins this season include victories over Army and Navy.

This year marks the 80th anniversary of Operation Torch, and the commencement of operations against access forces in Europe.


On December 10, the Black Knights will wear uniforms in honor of the iron soldiers of the first armor division.


Navy will wear space-themed uniforms acknowledging the 54 United States Naval Academy graduates who have become astronauts.




With the biggest rivalry games completed along with the college football conference championship games, it’s time to enjoy America’s Game in the annual Army-Navy rivalry.
